About the Course

Applying Nature-Responsible Banking is set within the context of the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB) – the world’s leading sustainable banking framework.

This course builds on the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB) Academy’s Introduction to Nature and Responsible Banking course. While the introductory course aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of nature and why its health is so important for our people, planet, and profit, Applying Nature-Responsible Banking aims to help you apply a nature-responsible approach to banking, reducing negative impacts on nature and moving towards positive contributions.

What can banks do to reduce their negative impacts on nature and move towards having more positive impacts? And how should they do it? A key objective of this course is to equip learners with some of the skills they need to navigate this change, and create win-win scenarios for their bank, its customers, and the environment.

Note: You don’t need to have completed the introductory course before doing the applied course, although you can if you want to! Find more details here.

Why this Course?

We rely on nature for our well-being, including our food, water, medicines, and air. Despite this, nature is in decline, driven by human activities. Natural capital has dropped by 40% in two decades, with significant land degradation and numerous species facing extinction. This biodiversity loss poses one of the top global risks, threatening economic growth, political and financial stability, and business sustainability. Recognising the urgent need for action, this course aims to guide banks in adopting a nature-responsible approach to halting the decline of nature and helping to restore it.

Course Details and Modules

  • Identify and interpret nature-related dependencies for customers and clients in a loan portfolio;
  • Assess nature-related physical and transition risks arising from a loan portfolio and recognise nature-related opportunities for their bank and its customers and clients;

  • Explain how to develop a strategy to mitigate risks and impacts, maximise opportunities, and achieve nature-related targets; and disclose nature-related information to stakeholders.

What learning resources are available?

To support achievement of the course learning outcomes, a fictitious bank is used as a case study and learners are invited to immerse themselves in the role of an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) expert. The role involves exploring nature-related issues that are relevant for the bank, such as identifying and assessing impacts, dependencies and risks arising from a fictitious loan portfolio, before making recommendations for developing a nature-related strategy.

Your learning resources include:

  • Interactive eLearning content
  • Audio-visual resources
  • Case studies
  • Opportunities to reflect on your own professional and personal practice and create an action plan to help your bank embed the Principles for Responsible Banking and support the transition to a more sustainable world.
