About the Course

Set within the context of the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), a framework for ensuring that banks’ strategies, activities and operations align with society’s goals as expressed in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement, the aim of this course is to raise your awareness and knowledge of climate change, the impact that climate change has on society and banks, the impact that society and banks have on climate change, and of the PRB which provide a framework for ensuring that banks’ strategies, activities and operations align with society’s goals – including the management of climate change - as expressed in the UN SDGs, the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as other international agreements. 

As you complete this course, you will develop your ability to approach your own professional practice through the lens of responsible and sustainable banking so that you too can identify opportunities to work more responsibly and sustainably within the context of your own role.

Course Details and Modules

Climate Change consists of four units:

  1. Responsible banking, and the triple planetary crisis
  2. Climate change – risks and impacts
  3. Opportunities for banks in supporting positive impacts for climate and nature
  4. Monitoring and reporting banks’ GHG emissions, and a Call to Action

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. explain the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and understand the imperative to address these issues to support the needs of present and future generations
  2. understand the impact of climate change on society and banking; and the impact of society and banking on climate change
  3. recognise the role of banking in supporting achievement of the UN SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement
  4. describe and explain the purpose of the PRB as a framework to maximise positive impact and reduce negative impact, and to support the transition to a more sustainable world; and explain the ways in which the Principles are implemented and measured in banking operations
  5. explain the challenges faced by banks in supporting positive impacts and reducing negative impacts upon climate and nature, and outline some of the ways in which they can be overcome.
  6. identify what banks can do within their own operations, and by working with clients and customers to help tackle climate change
